The
Middle Ages: A term applied loosely to that period in European
history which lies between the ancient and modern civilizations.
Various dates are given for the beginning of the period: the fall
of Rome in 476; the crowning of Charlemagne in 800; the death of
Charlemagne in 814; the end of the
Frankish Empire in 843. The period is variously conceived to have
closed with the Reformation in
Germany;
with the discovery of America by Columbus; with the invention of
printing and with the end of the Thirty Years' War in the
Peace of Westphalia {1648}. Most authorities, however, begin the
period between the fall of Rome and the Revival of Learning the
Dark Ages.
The
period of something like a thousand years marked a gradual transition
from semi-civilization of the masses to the light of an awakening
consciousness induced by the strong influence of the Church and
the spread of learning throughout Western Europe which followed
the exodus of scholars from the onrushing Turks when the conquered
Constantinople {1453}. The common people were largely engulfed in
serfdom at the time the Middle Ages were supposed to have begun.
There was no learning except at the top among the classes that existed,
where many brilliant men kept aloft the torch of knowledge. Few
people ever left their immediate neighborhoods, and therefore could
know nothing of the world beyond their doors. Feudal government
prevailed, in which the masses had no part. The Crusades
opened up new vistas, and the Crusaders brought back quickening
influences. Mental horizons broadened and there was an urge to higher
aspirations. When scholars scattered over Western Europe from the
sway of the Turk, enlightenment such as had not been hitherto known
began to spread, and pointed the way to the revival of learning
and the Renaissance.
